This is how the talk was on the beach in Salloum during the total ecplipse 29. 3. 2006 12.35 - 12.43
|
Now it is right before the big moment. The eclipse was total 12:38 - 12:42. Now you are listening to our smalltalk during the eclipse! Sorry, our native language is Danish! In the text in left column I translate a little of what we are talking about in chronologic order.
|
12.35 We are on the beach and primary looking towards south-west, where the big shadow will appear. In this direction is a costal cliff, and into the country a plateau with barren desert.
We observe the sharp shadows: The size of the Sun is much reduced, which is observed early during the ecplipse by the shadows going sharper and sharper. Right before 2. contact the shadows are very extreme, and on the same time the light is so reduced that the eye cannot compensate. |
|
 |
Cold: What the eye might not notice (the dimmed light) is a fact according to the reduced heat radiation, so it is clearly colder during the eclipse. Winds might appear as a result of the changed temperatures.
Distance to the hills: We estimate 4 km. to the costall cliff, with the velocity of the shadow, it will undergo the distance to us on only 4 seconds. To be observed, that demands a sharp difference between light and darkness!

12.36
Shadow waves. A phaenomen caused by the light passing close to the moons surface. Appears as those shadows, you will meet on shallow water at the beach, when small waves are projected down to the sand under the water.
On the photo: It seems as if there is web between the fingers on the hand on your left, while the hand on the right has cut the intervals between the fingers deeper. |

 |
12.37 Now it is very dark. Streetlight goes automatic on in Salloum (2-3 km. away). Automatic cameras uses flash with so reduced light.
12.38 2. contakt (= total eclipse), the diamondring, the corona is radiating far out right from the beginning. We are well adapted, since we have looked away from the sun during some time. It appears as sunrise all the way around. But more reddish above the ocean than over land. On the land-side the low hills covers the red colour.

We did not observe the core shadow arrive. Which we were expecting. A little dissappointing. But it was in general not observed this time, since the transistion from light to total shadow was not sharp enough. The shadow so to speak did steal upon us.
The corona radiates clearly in the directions of the moons passage. It can be explained by the rotation of the sun. Most corona can be met around the suns equator, which is on the plane (ecliptica), where most celestial bodies are found. It makes sense to see most corona in this particular direction.

There is more light during the total eclipe, than we expected. Is it reflection from the ocean and the light coloured desert which causes this?
12.42
3. contakt. The glourious diamondring, a sword of light, please take the protection glasses on again.
Shadow waves again in the same direction.
12.43 The End of the recording.
